Simply place a sufficient quantity directly on a fiber or ceramic kiln shelf or into a stainless steel container or almost any ceramic container (not glass!) then place your creation on top, nestling it into the vermiculite until all components are supported. Fire as usual.
Vermiculite is very light weight, so if you have chosen to put it directly on a shelf, rapidly opening and closing the kiln door can cause it to move around so move slowly. Not suitable for torch firing unless the vermiculite and your creation are placed inside a ceramic or small stainless steel container, as the torches blowing force can cause the vermiculite to blow around and away!
